London Underground

Built on the site of the old Creast House Family Restaurant, Waterloo & City is named after the London underground railroad. Chef Brendan Collins offers up some great grub in this Culver City eatery. General Manager Carolos Tomazoz (Le Bernardin NYC) has an extensive background in the food biz. British born Collins enrolled in culinary school at the young age of fifteen! He has been cooking amazing food ever since. Prior gigs include Melisse and Anisette (Santa Monica). He uses French technique combined with British style to produce extrordinary food. Enjoy a meal at the large communal table or make a reservation and sit in a taupe suede booth. If weather permits, patio dining is available. The wine list is extensive and ranges from Contessa Eylo ($30) to Domaine De Charmilles ($55), and Stephen Ross Chardonnay ($58). For red wines try Parallel ($45), it's wonderful! Beers range from $6 (Cervejarias Dark Lager from Brazil) to $12 (Lindeman's from Belgium). From the seasonal menu try the Truffle Fries with Parmesan. Enjoy the truffle aioli on the side! Our favorite salad is the Hearts of Romaine Caesar ($12). This isn't your average Caesar salad. Cauliflower Caesar dressing tops Prosciutto, white anchovies, and a perfectly poached egg all wrapped in a Parmesan crust. The Cured Meats Selection ($12), served with cornichons and pickled onions is another favorite. If you're in the mood for pizza the Indian Butter Chicken Pizza ($14) is unusual and delicious. Murgh Makahni sauce (pureed tomatoes, and Indian spices are cooked in butter and fresh cream) and mozzarella top this classic Indian delight. For entrees we enjoy the Boulder Flat Iron Steak ($25) served with potato gnocchi, sweetbreads, and spinach. Tender, juicy flat iron steak literally melts in your mouth. W & C always has a pot pie special. (Ask for prices). I enjoy the Chicken Pot Pie with it's flaky, buttery crust filled with chicken breast, potatoes, carrots, and peas. Roasted Sea Bass ($25) with Bosc pears, celery root, and red wine sauce will please any fish lover. Finally, if it's on the menu, Beef Wellington (Ask for price) is outstanding. Filet mignon is wrapped in puff pastry, served with bacon wrapped asparagus. Diners go crazy for this. If you still have room, the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($9) with vanilla ice cream is one of the best desserts I've tasted. Salted caramel sauce surrounds the small cake-like rich buttery pudding. Vanilla ice cream melts all over to create a taste sensation in your mouth. Service is top notch too making W & C one of my new favorites! Waterloo & City 12517 Washington Blvd. Culver City (310) 391-4222.
