Some Like it Hot!

I love my friend Danielle, She has the greatest sense of style and humor. We both love two things and do them so well together. Shopping at LuLu Lemon and eating. Well, last summer, when she was at the end of her pregnancy she introduced me to two things...Babies R Us and La Costa Mission. Now don't get me wrong, I can "slap a rack" at Babies R Us as well as any mother-to-be, but truth be told, I'd rather be on the patio at La Costa Mission. Since the first visit, I've been back for lunch a few times. Located on the land side of PCH next to the historic Malibu Courthouse, La Costa Mission Malibu locals and tourists alike embrace the warm cozy feel of the fireplace, beautiful tile floor, and wonderful food. LCM serves two of my favorite wines Napa Cellars Chardonnay ($12) and Franciscian Merlot ($40/bottle) on their gorgeous patio. But come for the margaritas! ($10)They are delightfully fresh. The Raspberry with tequila, fresh lime, triple sec, and muddled raspberries is refreshing, while the Bloody (tequila, triple sec, lemon, fresh muddled blood orange) is definitely my fave.) Or, have a Negra Modelo ($6) if you want a great bottled beer. We usually go for lunch so I am going to focus on that menu for this review. Start off with the Guacamole ($8)  It's super chunky and is served with roasted tomatillo sauce and house-made tortilla chips. You will eat every last bite! Another great appetizer that is Taquitos de Pollo ($9). Small crisp taquitos are stuffed with shredded seasoned chicken, poblano chilies, homemade sour cream, queso fresco, salsa verde, and more of that amazing guacamole. When we're with more that two people, it's worth it to order the Entremes Surtido ($9 per person).Nine bucks each gets you  an appetizer platter of quesadillas, chicken taquitos, ceviche tostadas, and guacamole). For an entree, Caesar Salad ($11/$14/16) is really outsting! Romaine and endive lettuce is served with lime dressing, coddled egg, cilantro, parmesan, garlic croutons, toasted pepitas. Order it plain, with chicken, or shrimp. The Tacos al Carbon ($16.50) we had were Black Angus skirt steak sliced thin, marinated in garlic, served with roasted pepper salsa, beans, and guacamole. Quesadillas ($16.50) are good-sized. I adore the Charcoal Chicken with Guacamole. Melted cheese on flour tortillas comes with black beans and a nice light jicima salad. If you like enchiladas, try the Enchiladas de Pollo. ($16). Homemade tortillas are wrapped around chicken, covered with green tomatillo sauce, served with black beans and queso fresco. Service is excellent too!  Who needs the beach? This is a good excuse to take a ride to Malibu! La Costa Mission 21337 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. (310) 317-0110. Take a trip to New Mexico without leaving LA. Step inside this hip, contemporary industrial space and you'll feel like you are in Taos. Chef Jose Acevedo has created the ultimate in upscale Mexican dining. Start your dinner with a round of drinks and be sure not to miss the Blood Orange Margarita. Other margaritas, The Mercado (100% agave silver tequila, triple sec and fresh sour) and Pineapple with Jalepenos are out of this world! Appetizers range from light to hearty. For a hearty appetizer order the Alambes De Arrachera ($17). Grilled skirt steak skewers are topped with cilantro ginger soy sauce. Enjoy the Santa Monica Farmer's Market fresh vegetable that come alongside them. The house made guacamole ($10) (Haas avocados, serrano chilies, cilantro, and red onion) is a sure winner. Chips are hot, fresh, and salty and you'll definitely need more! Another must-try is the Choriqueso ($6) with fresh chips. Melted cojita cheese, parmesan, oaxaca, chorizo, poblanos, and mushrooms highlight this dip. Order two because you won't want to share! If you want a taste of the best Carnitas in LA you've come to the right place! Slow-cooked natural pork, guacamole, chile de arbol salsa and cauliflower with escabeche (pickled Mexican peppers) accompany this succulent meat. ($21) Tacos de Pescado Estilo Baja ($10), one of my favorite dishes, is beer-battered white fish, and Mexican slaw served with avocado salsa.  Carnivores will go nuts for the Carne Asada ($25). Prime marinated steak, guacamole, cebolines, and grilled corn are accompanied by fresh tortillas.  For those brave enough to try cutting it, the Pavo en Mole Oaxaqueno ($15) is a Shelton Farms whole turkey leg served with mole and Mexican rice. Leave room for dessert because the Tres Leches cake is definitely a happy ending. Parking is available in the structures nearby. 1416 4th Street, Santa Monica (310)526-7121
