Old Gold

We love to share our hidden treasures and Old Place is just that. This place is rustic and I mean rustic. (Bathrooms are outside, but immaculately clean!) In business for over 40 years, Old Place Cornell is all about the customer service. Yes, there are some weird quirks about it, but the atmosphere and food is worth following the rules. The tiny shoe box of a restaurant holds all of 72 diners, and that includes the private room, three tables, and five booths. Due to limited space there are three different seatings available. The first, at 5:30, allows diners 90 minutes to eat. The second, at 6:30, includes two hours of dining. Reserve at the 8:30 p.m. time for a leisurely dinner. Another aspect that I love about OPC is that they only serve the freshest food available. Nothing is frozen here, ever; so if they run out, you'll have to make do with another delectable dish. Should you have to wait for any reason (yes, even with a reservation) try a glass of wine from The Cornell Winery right next door. Wait in the cozy space and winery employees will let you know when your table is ready. Owner Morgan Runyon pays tribute to his father's original menu with outstanding clams, steak, and baked potatoes. We love OPC for brunch on Sunday too. Frittatas are to die for! The Sausage, Ham, Grilled Onions, and Irish Cheddar ($11) is served in its own cast iron skillet. Crispy potatoes line the bottom and sourdough herb crust tops it off!  It's big enough to share and comes with toast. The Blue Cornmeal (five of them) Flapjacks ($10.50) are light and delicious. Top with seasonal fruit ($2.50) for a somewhat healthy breakfast treat. Rustic Thick Cut Sourdough French Toast ($10) served with real maple syrup and candied nuts is my husband's favorite. This is a large plate, so come hungry! Under no circumstances should you miss the Neuske's Applewood Smoked Bacon ($5). Bacon lovers will be in hog heaven after sampling some of the finest thick bacon around. Brunch Mimosas ($8) are 16 ounces of orange juice and sparkling wine. Dare to finish off more than one, if you can. These drinks are strong! If you are fortunate to hit OPC at lunch do order the Oak Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($9). Parmesan, cheddar, and mozzarella are all melted on oak grilled sourdough. Dinner at OPC is a true culinary experience. Start with the Noodle & Cheese Bake ($8). It's another version of mac and cheese and one of my favorite appetizers. The OPC Steamed Clams ($20) are succulent, tender, and a special treat. Steak is stellar and we adore the Oak Grilled Black Angus Sirloin ($19) served with a green salad, and loaded baked potato. Rosemary Pale Ale Chicken ($19) comes in second. For dessert try the Cast Iron Apple Crisp with Hand Whipped Cream ($8) or the Chocolate Lava Cake ($8). Either way you won't go wrong. Hearty and delicious fare is served in this log cabin eatery. Old Place Cornnell 29983 Mulholland Highway, Agoura Hills. (818) 706-9001 Reservations recommended.
