Sensational in Santa Monica

Located one block from Venice Beach in the former Le Boulangerie, M Street Kitchen serves wholesome American food. From its open kitchen to its exposed brick white wood paneling, M Street screams chic-hipster. The outdoor patio allows you to soak up the sun on a beautiful day. Food at M Street is fresh, seasonal, and organic and puts a modern spin on American cooking. Wines include California and Oregon plus house-made red and white sangria. We always start off with a glass of Girard Napa Valley sauvignon blanc ($10) or cabernet sauvignon ($16) from Justin in Paso Robles. Service is friendly and the kitchen will gladly make substitutions. The House Made Guacamole ($10) is vibrant and tasty. It's served with charred tomato salsa, cilantro, and freshly made corn tortilla chips. My only complaint is that I wish they gave you more! For a southern treat, try the Buttermilk Biscuits ($5). There is nothing on earth like biting into a buttery, crunchy (top and bottom) chewy (inside) hot biscuit especially when it comes with poblano honey butter. For salads we adore the Evil Thai Princess. ($13) Poached chicken, peanuts, lemongrass, red onion, cilantro, and kaffir lime highlight this yummy treat. You won't want to, but share it with a friend! The Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($19) is still my favorite entree. Two moist, tender all natural breasts are served with a buttermilk biscuit and house made coleslaw. We always substitute the garlic mashed potatoes for the coleslaw. M Street really knows what they are doing with fried chicken and this is one of the best you'll have in LA. Free Range Brick Chicken ($22) in paprika-lemon marinade with garlic mashies, and Bloomsdale (dark green, ruffled) spinach is the second runner up. Chicken is juicy and flavorful and portion size is good. Burgers are big and hearty. We love the Blue Cheese Burger ($14) with Maytag blue, crispy onions, avocado ($2) and bacon ($2). Burgers are char-grilled over a wood fire for a delicious smokey taste. Chicken Breast Tacos ($15) are also wonderful and served with charred tomato salsa. For dessert (and this is a serious dessert place) try the Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie with Vanilla Ice Cream ($4). Cookies are baked fresh daily at M Street Bakery next door. We also love the Banana Pudding Pie ($6) and Campfire Pie ($6) with chocolate pudding, graham cracker crust, and toasted marshmallows. Have a cup of Intelligentsia coffee ($2) or a Chai tea Latte ($4) to finish off a fantastic meal. M Street Kitchen 2000 N. Main Street, Santa Monica. (310) 396-9145.
