Chow Down

It's about time Calabasas got a restaurant with some character to liven up our little city! I've been to The Six on Pico and in Studio City and expected this one to be just as good. No surprise here! In case anyone was wondering what "The Six" means, it was named after The Society of Six. The afore-mentioned group of artists lived during the prohibition era in No Cal. In their artists' cabin, named the Chow House, they enjoyed each others' homemade wine, beers, and home-cooked meals as they worked. In this rustic-themed beautifully redone local eatery (furnished mostly with recycled materials)expect delicious local farm-to-table fare served in six categories from starters to desserts. This place is hopping, so be prepared for amazing food and atmosphere. Start off with one of the Six Society Cocktails like the Calabasas Heat ($12). Tequila, jalepeno, lime, and cucumber make a great combo! On tap, one of us had the Scrimshaw Pilsner ($9). We also had a glass of Rodney Strong Chardonnay ($8), and Franciscan Cabernet ($14). My favorite dish from the "to share" section  is the Sloppy Joe Sliders ($14). Portobello mushrooms, ground turkey, and a light sauce are combined between mini fresh brioche buns. From the "starters," I love the "six" mac n' cheese fritters ($8) Six different cheeses inside make these hard to resist. Dip them in ranch or Carolina bbq sauce. Share them if you can. Ever had white pizza? ($13) Not like this one! This is the reason to go with four people. So you can order a ton of food! Garlic tapenade, sauteed spinach, ricotta cheese, mozarella, and fresh parmesan top a puffy, crisp chewy crust. Pizzas are available gluten free for $2 more. Since I am a sucker for a good burger, I always get the Six Burger ($15). Juicy and delicious, it comes topped with Maytag blue cheese, crisp onion rings, butter lettuce, thousand island, and fresh tomatoes, on a brioche bun. The fries are some of the best I've had...ever. Substitute the parmesan truffle fries for $2 more. One can never go wrong with Mary's chicken cooked any way. The Roasted Mary's Chicken ($21) was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The mushroom jus and potatoes were excellent pairings. Because we have absolutely no willpower, we had the one of the finest Banana Cream Pies ($8) in this city. Yep, I said it. One of the finest. A layer of thick, dark chocolate cookie crumb crust on both the top and bottom encased chunks of real bananas, and real whipped cream. Next on my to-try list: fried pickles, roasted cauliflower, Niman Ranch NY Steak.  I'm in seventh heaven over The Six. The Six 23536 Calabasas Road, Calabasas.
